Dr. David H.
BPsych(Hons), DPsych(Clinical), MAPS, FCCLP
Co-founder and Clinical Director of Wellington Street Psychology and Macquarie Street Psychology
Dave received his undergraduate degree (with honours) in psychology and his Doctorate of Psychology (Clinical) from Deakin University. Although Dave has broad clinical interests and works with many different people and psychological issues, he tends to focus his practice within the LGBTQIAP+ community. He has a clinical and research background in sexuality- and gender-diversity and their relationship with mental health. Dave works across most psychological disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety, phobias, anger, OCD, trauma), and has a particularly interest in issues related to trauma, attachment, self-worth/esteem, substance-related issues (particularly methamphetamine use), and relationship problems. Dave's main approaches are Emotion focused Therapy (EFT), EMDR, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Schema Therapy. He is also trained in couples therapy (Gottman Therapy) and holds a diploma of clinical hypnosis. Dave is also available for gender assessments for individuals seeking to begin the gender affirmation/transition process.
Dave is passionate about both 1:1 and group therapy, and developed and facilitated Australia’s first multidisciplinary private outpatient program tailored specifically for men that combined psychological therapy with exercise physiology. Dave previously held the position of lecturer at Deakin University, where he chaired the counselling and coaching units. He has been the principle researcher on numerous areas of clinical research into the relationship between gender and mental health, and continues to supervise postgraduate students completing research in this area. As the Clinical Director of Wellington Street Psychology and Macquarie Street Psychology, Dave guides the ongoing clinical development and best-practice standards of both clinics.
